Tibetan Plateau Ecology
Helping Mitigate the Problems of Climate Change and Fresh Water Shortages through Global Mountain Forest Restoration and Preservation
The Tibetan Plateau is of Global Ecological importance
Very little attention is given to the huge environmental impact that the Tibetan Plateau has on the rest of the World. After the Arctic and the Antarctic, it is Earths’ largest store of ice. It is of global concern that this store is now melting at an alarming rate (approximately three times the global warming rate). In the past half-century, 82% of the plateau’s glaciers have retreated. In the past decade, 10% of its permafrost has degraded. As the changes continue, or even accelerate, their effects will reverberate far beyond the isolated plateau. This will change the water supply for billions of people and alter the atmospheric circulation over half the planet.
Huge quantities of forest and biodiversity have been removed from the plateau and this is a large contributing factor to the present problem.
It is in the interest of the Global community that the ecology of the Tibetan Plateau is preserved and restored.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama gives very wise advice concerning the environment.
